For many of us playing in Rosenblatt Stadium will be the pinnacle of our baseball careers. This is also the case for many of our fathers as they have proudly watched their sons grow into young men on this national setting. Although many have sat nervously in the stands for years it is their support that has allowed us to live out our dreams playing baseball. Little do our dads know it is their constant pacing in the stands or their quick reminders to keep our eye on the ball that lets us know they truly care. Not to mention the t-ball practices that they managed to run, all-star teams they choose to help fundraise for, or the shoulder pain many of them still endure as a result of throwing batting practice to their son that now only pitches.
It is a father's relationship with his son that at times can be more than tough love, but has prepared us for any curveball that will be thrown on and off the field. As sons we may have not chosen you, but baseball has chosen us and we will forever be connected through the crack of a bat, the smell of a glove or calluses that form as a result of the laces.
Dad, the time and effort that you have spent on and off the field with me is unlike any other. You have taught me to be confident in myself in whatever I choose to do, while maintaining to keep me modest after my accomplishments. As I prepare to leave Austin to teach in South Dakota, I am reminded of how incredibly lucky am I to have you as a father. I appreciate everything that you have done for me and in know way could I thank you enough for the support you have given me over the past 21 years. I know that you weren't surprised today when I told you I didn't have a present yet, but hopefully this can buy me a little more time.
So Dad, and all the Longhorn Fathers, thank you for all that you have done for us. This ride to Omaha has been magical and one that we are glad to be sharing with you. Happy Fathers Day!
Forever Sidearm,
Keith Shinaberry
