Future Longhorn Marquise Goodwin sets national high school record in long jump at U.S. Championships

EUGENE, Ore. -- Future Longhorn Marquise Goodwin set the national high school record in finishing fifth in the senior long jump at the U.S. Championships on Saturday. Goodwin, who is finishing up his career at Garland Rowlett, took three jumps and finished with a mark of 8.18m (26-10). The 8.18m leap bettered the previous high school record of 26-9.25, which was set in 1989 by Dion Bentley of Pittsburgh Penn Hills, who later competed collegiately at Florida. Goodwin is now tied for 10th all-time on the World Junior performer list.
Earlier, Goodwin won the junior long jump with a mark of 7.96m (26-1.50). Goodwin only needed one jump to win the event. He posted the mark on his second jump after fouling on his first attempt. Goodwin decided to pass on his final four attempts in order to prepare for the senior long jump, which took place approximately two hours after the finish of the junior long jump.
Freshman Trevante Rhodes finished third in the junior 200 meters, just missing a spot on the U.S. team that will compete at the Pan American Junior Championships in Trinidad. Rhodes posted a wind-aided 21.39 in the prelims to qualify third and then clocked a wind-aided 21.20 in the final. Yesterday, Rhodes finished fifth in the 100 meters.
Senior Jake Morse clocked an 8:49.20 in the final of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, even though he had to stop at one point during the race. With just over two laps to go, Morse was in fifth coming off the water jump but was unable to navigate the next hurdle and had to pull up. After making sure not to impede any other runners, Morse returned to the race, finishing 11th.
