Pressel leads Women's Golf after 36 holes at season-opening Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. -- Texas freshman Madison Pressel (73-72) fired a 36-hole score of 1-over-par 145 in her collegiate debut at the Cougar Classic to finish the first day tied for 17th place. As a team, the Longhorns (304-290) are tied for 10th place after two rounds of play in their season-opening event with an 18-over 594.
Beginning her first round on the fifth hole of the par-72, 6,211-yard Yeamans Hall Golf Club, Pressel carded four-straight pars before finding red numbers on the ninth and 10th holes. Three consecutive bogeys on the next three holes pushed her to 1-over through nine holes, but the Boca Raton, Fla., native found additional birdies on the 15th and 17th holes to return to under par. Pressel bogeyed the first hole, her 15th of the day, and her final hole, the fourth, to finish her first round at 1-over 73.
Pressel carded four birdies in her second round, including two on her final three holes, to counter four bogeys and finish at even par in her second round of collegiate golf.
Fellow freshman Katelyn Sepmoree (75-74=149, +5) played consistently with back-to-back rounds of 3-over 75 and 2-over 74 to tie for 39th place at 5-over 149. Sophomore Nicole Vandermade (82-69=151, +7), Texas' top returner, fired a team-best 3-under 69 in the second round after carding a 10-over 82 in the opening round. Vandermade is currently tied for 52nd place at 7-over 151.
Freshmen Desiree Dubreuil (78-75=153, +9) and Haley Stephens (78-79=157, +13) are tied for 61st and 80th places, respectively, at 9-over 153 and 13-over 157.
Georgia (280-283=563, -13) sits atop the team leaderboard with a 12-stroke lead over current runners-up Florida State (292-283=575, -1) and Furman (291-284=575). The Seminoles' Lacey Agnew (71-65=136, -8) leads the field at 8-under 136 after firing a tournament-record 7-under 65 in the second round.
The final round of the Cougar Classic will begin at 7:45 a.m. Central with a shotgun start. Live scoring can be found online at Golfstat.com.

On the team's overall performance: Overall, I was really pleased with today. I saw a lot of good golf, even though we showed our youth and nerves in the first round. I liked the energy, the way this group thinks, and seeing everyone fight hard all day. Once we settled in and recovered from our 'first-time jitters', I was very impressed.
On the play of freshman Madison Pressel: This golf course sets itself up well for Madison's game. She's really self aware, and she understands her swing and her game. She's a very capable player and very intuitive, and she was ready to play today. It was fun to watch her play and to see how composed and focused she remained throughout the two rounds.
