HOUSTON -- The No. 15 University of Texas Women's Track and Field team picked up five individual victories at the season-opening Leonard Hilton Memorial, hosted by the University of Houston Friday night.
Senior All-American Jordyn Brown led the way with wins in both the shot put (50-8/15.44m) and weight throw (57-4.75/17.49m). Brown's put of 50-8 earned her the Longhorns' first NCAA provisional mark of the season. Sophomore Okwukwe Okolie and freshman Akua Senchery also competed in the shot put, finishing 6th (42-11.75/13.10m) and 15th (38-0.25/11.59m), respectively.
Other Longhorns picking up field victories in the first meet were junior Chantel Malone who recorded a mark of 19-10.75 (6.06m) in the long jump; freshman Natasha Masterson who placed first in the pole vault with a career-best mark of 12-7.5 (3.85m); and sophomore Beverly Owoyele who recorded a personal-best jump of 18-7.25 (5.76m) in the `B' section of the long jump for first.
Masterson's 12-7.5 was a full foot and a half higher than her previous personal best.
On the track, sophomore Judy Nwosu posted a second-place finish in the 400m with a time of 57.78 while sophomore Kennetra Jones placed fifth in 59.06. Sophomore Ashley Starks finished the 60m hurdles in 8.94 for eighth.
Texas placed both of its 4x400m relays in the top three with the quartet of Owoyele, sophomore Stacey-Ann Smith, sophomore Angele Cooper and Jones placing second in 3:50.46. Malone along with Nwosu, Starks and Masterson finished third in 3:53.29.
The Longhorns totaled 84.50 points for third place behind Rice (1st, 127 pts.) and Houston (2nd, 99 pts.).
The other half of the Texas squad will compete at the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 16 in College Station.
