HOUSTON -- The No. 15 Texas Softball team received a complete game performance by freshman pitcher Blaire Luna and its offense recorded 11 hits as it ousted No. 16 Louisiana Lafayette, 7-1, Saturday morning at the Marriott Houston Classic. The victory improved the Longhorns to 9-0 on the season, while the Ragin' Cajuns fell to 6-2. The Horns 9-0 start marks their second-best start in program history.
Luna (5-0) tossed 7.0 innings, scattering four hits, allowing just her second run of the season and striking out six. Louisiana Lafayette starter Donna Bourgeois (3-2) took the loss after throwing 6.0 innings and surrendering seven runs on 11 hits.
Texas' offense caught fire in the second, using four hits and taking advantage of two ULL miscues to plate five runs. Sophomore third baseman Nadia Taylor led off the frame with a single down the leftfield line and advanced two bases on a bunt single by freshman rightfielder Taylor Hoagland. A double-steal allowed Taylor to score and moved Hoagland into scoring position.
Junior second baseman Raygan Feight reached on an error, allowing Hoagland to score and a two-run homer by junior first baseman Shelby Savony pushed the UT lead to 4-0. The Horns widened the margin to 5-0 when a second ULL error allowed sophomore centerfielder Courtney Craig to come around and score after reaching on a single.
In the fifth, Texas added to its lead when Taylor singled to leadoff the inning and an RBI single by Savony allowed Taylor to score.
Louisiana scored its lone run in the top of the sixth when Britni Soria connected for a leadoff home run to centerfield.
Craig answered in the bottom half of the frame for the Horns, hammering a leadoff solo shot to right centerfield to cap the scoring at 7-1.
Taylor, Savony, Craig and Bennett paced the UT offense on the day with two hits apiece, while Savony notched three RBI and one run scored.
Texas returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 20 when it takes on Iowa State at the Houston Classic. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Central.
