No. 3 UCLA upends No. 13 Softball, 9-1

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- UCLA fired a combined one-hitter as the third-ranked Bruins downed No. 13 Texas, 9-1, Saturday night at the Cathedral City Classic in a run-rule shortened game. The loss dropped the Longhorns to 11-2 on the year, while the Bruins improved to 13-1.
UCLA starter Donna Kerr (6-0) earned the win after throwing 5.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit, walking two and fanning six. Texas freshman righthander Blaire Luna (5-1) suffered the first loss of her career, lasting just 3.2 innings, giving up four runs on four hits, walking one and striking out six.
Texas got on the board in the third when sophomore centerfielder Courtney Craig launched a two-out solo homer to left centerfield to put UT ahead, 1-0.
The Bruins answered with a solo home run of their own in the bottom of the fourth when first baseman Megan Langenfeld connected for the Bruins first hit of the game, evening the tally at one apiece. UCLA added three more runs later in the frame when designated player Sammy Camuso hit a two-run shot to left centerfield and catcher Charlotte Dolan hit a solo homer to put the Bruins in front 4-1.
UCLA tacked on three more runs in the fifth when second baseman GiOnna DiSalvatore roped a three-run home run to right field that moved the lead to 7-1. The Bruins added two more runs in the sixth with a pair of RBI singles by B.B. Bates and Dre Harrison to end the game, 9-1.
Texas returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 27 when it takes on UC Davis and Syracuse. The Horns' first game of the day is slated for a 5 p.m. Central start.
