AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 5 Texas (15-2) captured the doubles point and collected five singles victories in a 6-1 win over No. 25 Michigan (4-6) Saturday evening at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Texas opened the doubles session with a victory at the first slot. UT seniors Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala broke for an early 2-0 lead over Michigan's Jason Jung and Evan King and ran away with an 8-3 victory. Michigan's Chris Cha and Chris Madden broke Texas' Jean Andersen and Daniel Whitehead early on at third doubles. But, trailing 4-2, the Texas duo broke, held serve and broke once more to assume a 5-4 lead. Andersen and Whitehead later held for a 7-5 lead and broke the Wolverines' serve in the final game to assume an 8-5 win and clinch the doubles point.
Texas juniors Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico found themselves in a similar hole against Michigan's George Navas and Mike Sroczynski before rallying to victory at second doubles. Trailing 6-3, Corrie and Damico held serve, broke Michigan and held once more to even the match at six. At 7-all, Texas broke again before holding serve in the final game to take a 9-7 win.
Kutrovsky staked Texas to a 2-0 lead after posting a 6-2, 6-4 win over Michigan's 46th-ranked Jung at first singles. UT freshman Vasko Mladenov added on to the Longhorns' lead at sixth singles, where he posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Michigan's Cha. Texas' Andersen clinched the match for the Horns at fourth singles, where he dealt the Wolverines' Madden a 7-6, 6-2 defeat.
Michigan's Sroczynski put the Wolverines on the board at third singles with a defeat of UT's Damico in two tie-break sets. UT's Zavala outlasted Michigan's Navas by a 7-6 (6), 6-3 count at fifth singles, and Corrie rallied from a one-set deficit at second singles to defeat the Wolverines' King, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Texas resumes play on Sunday, March 21 when it hosts Pepperdine.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
"We got pushed tonight. The double session got very competitive, but when our backs were against the wall, we stepped up and played good tennis. I give Michigan credit. They came in here and played really hard. Some of our new guys are starting to figure out what it takes to finish matches. We'll give the guys a few days off and get ready for Pepperdine next Sunday."
