Orlando – Texas Men's Tennis former player Sebastian Gorzny claimed the singles title of the USTA American Collegiate Player Wildcard Playoff on Sunday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. By winning the tournament, Gorzny secured a US Open main draw wild card.
Gorzny, who finished the season ranked No. 2 in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), won two matches on the way to the championship. He first defeated No. 19 Matthew Forbes, who is formerly of Michigan State but is transferring to Ohio State, 6-2, 6-2, on Tuesday. He then topped No. 4 Trevor Svajda of SMU, 6-4, 6-2, on Thursday.
"It's crazy," Gorzny said. "I was relieved to get the win, and I don't really think it's going to sink in that I'm playing in the US Open until I get there and actually step on court, but I'm just trying to absorb it and really believe it."
Gorzny had just been named the ITA National Senior Player of the Year on Tuesday after having already earned ITA All-American honors in singles. He was also the Most Outstanding Player of the ITA National Indoor Championships, and the Most Valuable Player of the SEC Championship, while also being named First Team All-SEC for the second-straight year.
Gorzny compiled a 26-8 overall record in singles, a 20-6 mark in dual matches, all at No. 1, and was 7-2 in the SEC. As part of that, he registered seven top-15 victories and 13 top-50 wins. He was also second on the team in overall clinches with seven.
He helped take Texas to an NCAA National Runner-Up finish, a second-straight Final Four, the program's first ITA Indoors National Championship, and back-to-back sweeps of the SEC regular season and tournament titles. The Longhorns posted a second-straight 29-win season, which ties for the most by the program since 1975, along with the 2019 team.
