Rowing posts seven wins in third session of Longhorn Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Rowing team swept all seven of its races in the third session of the Longhorn Invitational, Saturday evening on Lady Bird Lake. The Longhorns won the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four, first novice eight, second novice eight and both of its novice four races.
Texas' first varsity eight boat of coxswain Emma Dirks, stroke Charity McDonald, Courtney Nicklas, Meg George, Laurel McCaig, Jacqueline Gorcyca, Nancy Arrington, Jennifer VanderMaarel and Felicia Izaguirre-Werner defeated Iowa, 6:35.30-to-6:44.20.
The Horns' second varsity crew of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Stephanie Matejka, Anna Thomson, Katarina Susac, Callie Mattrisch, Jelena Zunic, Tajana Lovric, Sally Tunell and Karli Sheahan knocked off the Hawkeyes, 6:48.50-to-6:50.40.
The first varsity four boat comprised of coxswain Megan Kelly, Colleen Irby, Katrina Cerk, Audrey Ullman and Kaitlin Lewallen clocked a time of 7:40.60 to down Iowa (7:45.50).
UT's first novice boat of coxswain Erin Gamez, Taylor Parker, Madeline Shaw, Callan Wingo, Chelsea Burns, Lyndsey DuBose, Emily Gross, Sarah Pedersen and Jillian Domingue posted a time of 7:01.80 to easily edge the Hawkeyes (7:18.30).
Texas' second novice crew of coxswain Katie Saye, Lindsay Brettman, Brianna Bridges, Kaylyn Fenner, Samantha McPherson, Kassandra Budzik, Spencer White, Brittany Jensen and Kat Tong defeated UCF, 7:21.0-to-7:43.20.
The Longhorns' novice four boats both garnered victories as well with the 2N4 besting Iowa, 8:28.90-to-8:50.7 and the third novice four boat defeating Oklahoma's second novice four, 8:15.30-to-8:26.40.
The Longhorn Invitational is a 2,000 meter dual-style race held annually on Lady Bird Lake.
Texas returns to action on Sunday, March 21 in the final session of the Longhorn Invitational. Racing begins at 8 a.m. Central.
