SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Texas State hit a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to knock off the No. 15 Texas Softball team, 9-7, Wednesday night at Bobcat Stadium. The loss dropped the Longhorns to 23-7 on the year, while the Bobcats improved to 14-13.
Freshman outfielder Taylor Hoagland's single in the fifth inning extended her hitting streak to 17 games, breaking the all-time UT hitting streak record. Hoagland broke the previous record of 16 games that Lindsay Gardner set during the 2000 season.
Freshman righthander Blaire Luna (12-4) suffered the loss after tossing the final 3.1 innings in relief. She surrendered five runs on three hits, walking two and fanning two. Freshman starter Kim Bruins threw the first 3.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Texas State reliever Anne Marie Taylor (5-4) earned the win after firing the final 2.1 innings, giving up just one hit and walking two.
The Bobcats battled back from a 7-4 deficit in the final two frames and ended the game on a walk-off three-run homer by rightfielder Leah Boatright in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Texas State kicked off the scoring in the second, taking advantage of back-to-back RBI singles by McKenzie Baack and Allyce Rother to take a quick 2-0 lead. The Bobcats tacked on two more runs in the third when Boatright connected for a two-run homer that moved the Texas State lead to 4-0.
The Longhorns shrank the lead to 4-2 in the fourth when junior catcher Amy Hooks and senior shortstop Loryn Johnson connected for back-to-back solo homers.
Texas continued its rally in the fifth, sending 10 batters to the plate and registering five runs on five hits. Sophomore outfielder Courtney Craig led off the frame with a single and Hoagland followed with a single to put two runners on. After Texas State recorded the second out of the frame, sophomore third baseman Nadia Taylor singled to the pitcher to load the bases. An RBI single by Hooks scored Craig and a bases-loaded walk by Johnson scored Hoagland.
Senior designated player Tallie Thrasher kept things rolling in the fifth with a two-run single to rightfield that scored Taylor and Hooks, giving UT a 6-4 lead. An illegal pitch by Texas State reliever Anne Marie Taylor allowed Johnson to score and push the Texas advantage to 7-4.
Texas State closed the margin to 7-6 in the sixth inning, using a walk and a hit-by-pitch to put runners on and an RBI single by Kristina Tello to score one run. An error on Tello's single allowed a second runner to race home, closing the margin to one run.
Texas returns to action when it hosts Texas A&M Corpus Christi in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 25. First pitch of game one begins at 5 p.m. Central.
