Surhoff claims 200 individual medley at NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Texas freshman Austin Surhoff captured the NCAA title in the 200-yard individual medley, and the Longhorns added four additional top-five finishes as UT wrapped up day one at the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Texas finished the first of the meet's three days in first place with 145 points. California sits in second place with 139 points and Florida holds third place with 118 points. Defending NCAA champion Auburn is in fourth with 114.5 points, and Stanford rounds out the top-five with 106 points.
Surhoff became Texas' second NCAA 200 individual medley champion when he out-touched Florida's Shaune Fraser and claimed the event in 1:42.95. Fraser took second in 1:42.99. Senior Ricky Berens placed seventh in 1:44.70. Surhoff is UT's first NCAA titlist in the event since 2001, when Nate Dusing captured the event. He safely defended the top seed he earned in the afternoon preliminary round at 1:43.17. Junior Bryan Collins added a second-place finish in the consolation final with a time of 1:44.25.
Sophomore Drew Livingston led the Texas diving contingent by claiming a third-place finish in the one-meter diving event with 413.10 points. Junior Matt Cooper added nine points for the Horns after winning the consolation final with 395.95 points. It marked another banner day for the Texas divers at a NCAA meet, as Livingston and Cooper teamed up to earn 25 points collectively.
Texas opened Friday's finals by taking third in the 200 freestyle relay, as Feigen, senior Dave Walters, senior Ben Van Roekel and junior Scott Jostes finished in 1:16.23. Feigen led off in 19.11 before Walters picked up the second leg in 19.16. Van Roekel split a lightning-fast 18.76 before Jostes anchored in 19.20. The mark of 1:16.23 is the third-fastest time in school history.
The Longhorns bundled 21 points from its showing in the 50 freestyle, where Feigen took fourth in 19.08. Walters added a third-place finish in the consolation final in 19.63. Feigen clocked a then-pool record of 18.97 in the afternoon preliminary round.
Texas finished off the evening by taking fifth in the 400 medley relay in 3:06.08. Senior Hill Taylor led off in 46.68 before junior Scott Spann picked up the breaststroke in 51.42. Berens picked up the butterfly in 46.17 before Feigen anchored in 41.81.
Day two of the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships begins Saturday at 11 a.m. Central at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Live results and video links are available at NCAA.com.

On his NCAA 200 IM title: I was happy just to make it in the championship final in prelims. I figured with the loaded field we had at the NCAA Championships that it was going to take everything I had in prelims to get into that final. Tonight, I knew it was time to swim the race the way I know how to swim it. I wanted to take it out nice and easy and save what I had left to race at the end. That's what Eddie Reese and Kris Kubik have trained me to do. They have trained me to race. All I wanted to do was race and have fun.
