TEMPE, Ariz. -- The University of Texas Women's Golf team carded a 9-over 297 in the second round of the PING/ASU Invitational on Saturday and is currently in 12th place at 20-over 595 (299-297). Sophomore Nicole Vandermade (73-72) is tied for 20th place at 1-over 145 after finishing her final five holes with an eagle and three birdies.
Beginning on the 10th hole for the second consecutive day, Vandermade quickly climbed to 2-over with bogeys on her first two holes. A birdie on the 14th hole dropped her down to 1-over, but she made the turn at 2-over with a bogey - birdie - bogey finish on holes 16, 17 and 18. She struggled again on the third and fourth holes, carding a five on the par-4 third hole and a six on the par-4 fourth hole to reach 5-over. However, Vandermade shaved the surplus off of her scorecard over the final five holes by finishing with three-straight birdies after making her team-high third eagle of the season on the par-5 fifth hole. Freshman Desiree Dubreuil (76-72=148, +4) also finished Saturday's round at even-par. Dubreuil's first 16 holes included one birdie, one bogey and a double bogey, but she birdied holes eight and nine - her 17th and 18th of the day - to finish at even and tied for 37th place.
Senior Shannon Fish (76-76) and freshman Haley Stephens (74-78) are tied for 57th place at 8-over 152. Freshman Madison Pressel (76-77) rounds out Texas' lineup with a 9-over 153 and is tied for 64th. Host ASU (279-286=565, -11) holds a six-stroke advantage over current runner-up Southern California (281-290=571, -5) after 36 holes. UCLA (291-286) and Denver (291-286) are tied for third place with scores of 1-over 577.
This year's 17-team field is comprised of 11 of the Top 25 squads in the nation, including top-ranked UCLA and No. 2 Arizona State.
Tulsa' Kristina Merkle (68-69) leads all individuals at 7-under 137, while Arizona State's Jennifer Johnson (69-70) and Southern Cal's Jennifer Song (69-70) are at 5-under 139 and tied for second.
The final round of the PING/ASU Invitational will conclude with a 9:30 a.m. CT split-tee start. Texas will be paired with Pepperdine and Stanford off of the 10th tee beginning at 10:50 a.m. Live scoring will be available on www.Golfstat.com.
