NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Texas Women's Golf team carded a 14-over-par 302 in the opening round of the 54-hole Big 12 Championship to tie for fourth place. The trio of senior Shannon Fish, sophomore Nicole Vandermade and freshman Haley Stephens lead the Longhorns on the individual leaderboard, as they are tied for 13th place with first-round scores of 3-over 75.
Friday's round was a tale of two nines for Texas. Beginning the round on the back nine of the par-72, 6,327-yard Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, UT was 16-over when making the turn. The four scoring players turned it around on the front nine, as Fish played the final nine holes at 2-under and Vandermade, Stephens and freshman Madison Pressel recorded even-par scores for the final half. Fish, Vandermade and Stephens are tied for 13th place at 3-over 75. Pressel is two strokes back at 5-over 77 and tied for 28th place. Freshman Desiree Dubreuil is tied for 58th with an 11-over 83.
Texas is competing in the conference championship without the presence of third-year head coach Martha Richards. Richards, who led the Longhorns to a third-place Big 12 Championship finish in 2008 and sixth place last year, is tending to an immediate family member's illness at this time and is currently in California.
No. 2-seed Oklahoma State leads the field by six strokes at 5-over 293. Texas Tech turned in the only other sub-300 round on Friday with an 11-over 299 and is in second place. Iowa State rounds out the top-three teams on the leaderboard at 12-over 300, and Colorado is tied for fourth place with UT at 302.
Two Cowgirls, Victoria Park and Caroline Hedwall, are tied for the individual lead at 2-under 70. Texas Tech's Rosalyn Kim carded a 71 and is in third place, while OSU's Courtney McKim and Colorado's Emily Talley are tied for fourth place at even-par 72. The second round of the Big 12 Women's Golf Championship will begin at 8 a.m CT Saturday morning on the first and 10th holes. The Longhorns will begin tomorrow's round on the first hole and play alongside Colorado and Kansas State. Live scoring will be available on www.Golfstat.com.
