NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Texas Women's Golf team (302-297=599, +23) carded a 9-over-par 297 in the second round of the Big 12 Championship on Saturday to climb into second place behind 36-hole leader Oklahoma State (293-296=589, +13). Freshman Desiree Dubreuil (83-71=154, +10) fired one of just four sub-par rounds in the 60-player field during the second day of action to fuel the Longhorns' surge on 'moving day' in the league championship.
Playing in the first wave on the par-72, 6,237-yard Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, the Longhorns bettered their first-round score by four strokes to move up two positions on the leaderboard Saturday afternoon. Dubreuil's 1-under 71 was a marked improvement over her previous day when she carded an 11-over 83, as her scorecard on Saturday was balanced with three birdies and three bogeys. Dubreuil finished strong for UT with four-consecutive pars on her final four holes while winds speeds picked up and gusts reaching 30 mph began to wreak havoc on playing conditions. She is currently tied for 30th place at 10-over.
Senior Shannon Fish (75-72=147, +3) leads UT on the individual leaderboard through two rounds at 3-over 147 and tied for fourth place. She recorded birdies on holes three, five, seven and eight to quickly drop to 4-under, but a double bogey on the ninth hole and ensuing bogeys on 12 and 17 pushed Fish back to even par. She closed her round with a thrilling 30-foot putt from behind the pin to save par on 18 and finish the day at even.
The lone senior in Texas' lineup, Fish has produced strong finishes in the league championship during her collegiate career. Her previous Big 12 Championships have included a tie for 11th place (2007) and a tie for 6th (2008).
Sophomore Nicole Vandermade (75-77) and freshman Haley Stephens (75-77) are tied for 18th place with identical scores of 8-over 152. Freshman Madison Pressel (77-79) rounds out the UT squad with a 12-over 156 and is tied for 43rd.
Texas is competing in the conference championship without the presence of third-year head coach Martha Richards. Richards, who led the Longhorns to a third-place Big 12 Championship finish in 2008 and sixth place last year, is tending to an immediate family member's illness at this time and is currently in California.
The final round of the Big 12 Women's Golf Championship will begin at 8 a.m. CT Sunday morning on the first and 10th holes. The Longhorns will be paired alongside Oklahoma State and Texas A&M and the trio will tee off from 8:50 - 9:30 a.m. in 10-minute increments. Live scoring will be available on www.Golfstat.com.
