WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Led by a pair of 1-over-par 73s from senior Shannon Fish (76-73=149, +5) and freshman Haley Stephens (74-73=147, +3), the Texas Women's Golf team climbed three places up the leaderboard at the NCAA Championships in Wednesday's rain-plagued second round. The Longhorns (299-296=595, +19) carded an 8-over 296 in the delay-free morning wave to improve from 18th place to 15th at the halfway point in the national championship at Country Club of Landfall.
Wednesday's play was halted at 7:27 p.m. ET with 27 players still on the course. The 24 teams and six individuals encountered a 58-minute weather delay early in the afternoon and another 50-minute break less than an hour later. A final downpour cut short the day's action after another system swept through coastal North Carolina. The remaining groups will continue their second rounds at 7:30 a.m. Thursday. After a one-hour break, the third round will begin.
Fish's 73 was her best single-round performance in three NCAA Championships appearances. The Spring, Texas, product shaved three strokes off of her opening-round 76 with four bogeys and three birdies. Through 36 holes, Fish remains the only UT player without a double bogey on her scorecard, and she extended her streak of rounds counted for the cumulative team score to a perfect 19-for-19 on the season. Fish is tied for 52nd place at 5-over 149.
Coming off of a career-best third place finish at the NCAA West Regional, Stephens continued to play the best golf of her freshman season on Wednesday and is tied for 29th place at 3-over 147. She recorded three birdies and two bogeys, but picked up two strokes on the par-4, 387-yard ninth hole after a double bogey.
Sophomore Nicole Vandermade (72-75=147, +3) followed her opening-round even-par 72 with a 3-over 75. She is tied for 29th place with Stephens at 3-over 147. Freshman Madison Pressel (77-75=152, +8) is tied for 83rd place at 8-over 152 with rounds of 77 and 75, while freshman Desiree Dubreuil (79-76=155, +11) is at 11-over 155 and tied for 100th place.
As a team, the Longhorns were even on the back nine in the second round.
USC (282-288) sits atop the team standings at 6-under 570. Alabama (289-288) trails by seven strokes at 1-over 577 and Purdue (284-294) sits eight strokes back with a 2-over 578 scorecard.
