WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Freshman Desiree Dubreuil (79-76-72=227, +11) led the Texas Women's Golf team with an even-par 72 in the third round of the NCAA Championships at Country Club of Landfall. The Longhorns (299-296-300=895, +31) posted a 12-over 300 on Thursday morning and sit in a tie for 17th place at 31-over 895 through 54 holes of competition.
Dubreuil's 72 matched Texas' previous low round in this year's national championship, as sophomore Nicole Vandermade fired the same score in Tuesday's first round. The Horns' top finisher in three spring events, Dubreuil carded her lowest round since shooting a final-round 2-under 70 at the PING/ASU Invitational (Apr. 11). Her round was marked by birdies on the fourth, fifth and 14th holes, and as many bogeys on holes eight, 15 and 16.
Dubreuil climbed 26 places on the individual leaderboard after beginning the day tied for 100th place. She is currently tied for 74th place with Vandermade (72-75-80) at 11-over 225.
Also counting towards Texas' third-round team score were a trio of 4-over 76s by senior Shannon Fish (76-73-76=225, +9) and freshmen Haley Stephens (74-73-76=223, +7) and Madison Pressel (77-75-76=228, +12). Stephens leads UT on the leaderboard in a tie for 41st place. Fish is tied for 59th on the eve of her final round of collegiate golf, and Pressel is tied for 84th place.
As a team, the Longhorns played the front nine at 10-over. The par-3, 131-yard second hole proved the most costly with Stephens and Fish carding double bogeys and Pressel making bogey for 5-over.
Eighth-ranked Purdue (284-294-280=858, -6) posted a field-low 8-under 280 Thursday afternoon to storm back from an eight-stroke deficit and claim the lead heading into Friday's finale. The Boilermakers hold a seven-stroke lead over second-place Southern California (282-288-295=865, +1). Arizona State (288-293-290=871, +7) and Alabama (289-288-294=871, +7) share third place.
Arizona State rookie Jennifer Johnson (67-70-70) carded a 2-under 70 for the second straight round to retain the individual lead with a 9-under 207. Johnson holds a one-stroke lead over Oklahoma State sophomore Caroline Hedwall (70-70-68), who moved into second place at 8-under 208. USC's Jennifer Song (67-71-72) and Purdue's Maude-Aimee LeBlanc (67-73-70) are tied for third at 6-under 210.
The Longhorns will conclude the NCAA Championships beginning at 7 a.m. CT Friday morning on the first tee. Texas will play alongside 16th-place New Mexico and fellow 17th-place TCU. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com, and the NCAA will provide live videostreaming of the 16th, 17th and 18th holes.
