AUSTIN, Texas - A group of current, former and future Longhorns will take to the track this week at the 2010 U.S.A. Track and Field Outdoor Championships held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa from Thursday-Sunday, June 24-27.
Current Longhorns, sophomore Stacey-Ann Smith and freshman Alicia Peterson, will compete in the juniors section of the championships both running in the 400m while Smith is also slated to race in the 200m. Joining Smith in the 200-400m double is incoming freshman Briana Nelson (Greenville, S.C). Nelson is currently seeded fourth in the 400m.
Texas Exes competing will be Sanya Richards-Ross (400m), Alexandria Anderson (100m, 200m), Bianca Knight (100m, 200m), and Michelle Carter (shot put). Richards-Ross and Carter are defending national champions as Richards-Ross is looking to win her third-straight 400m national title and sixth overall while Carter will also be looking to win her third consecutive crown.
Texas also has a strong contingent of incoming freshman participating in the juniors section. In addition to Nelson's 200-400m double, A'Lexus Brannon (Beaumont, Texas) will be looking to double in the long and triple jump. Brannon is currently the 2010 Girls High School National leader in the long jump and most recently swept the two events at the 2010 New Balance Nationals, June 17-19. Marielle Hall (Haddonfield, N.J.), will run in the 1,500m and is currently seeded fourth heading into the first round.
Those competing in the juniors sections will be looking to earn a spot on the U.S. roster for the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships held July 19-25 in Moncton, Canada. The top two finishers in each event will advance to the world championships. There will be no USA qualifying in the senior events as there isn't a senior world championships this summer.
Fans can follow the action on either ESPN or NBC Friday-Sunday. Races not covered live on TV can be viewed on USATF.org.
