AUSTIN, Texas -- Former University of Texas basketball standout Avery Bradley was selected as the No. 19 pick by the Boston Celtics in the 2010 NBA Draft on Thursday evening at Madison Square Garden.
Bradley becomes the sixth first-round selection in the Rick Barnes era (since 1999), joining Chris Mihm (2000), T.J. Ford (2003), LaMarcus Aldridge (2006), Kevin Durant (2007) and D.J. Augustin (2008). He also is the 11th Texas player to be drafted in the last 12 years.
Bradley played in all 34 games during his one season in Austin and earned Big 12 All-Rookie Team (by league coaches) and Big 12 All-Freshman Team (by league media) honors. He also garnered All-Big 12 Honorable Mention accolades (by league coaches). Bradley ranked second on the team in scoring (11.6 ppg), steals (44) and minutes played (29.5 mpg) and third in assists (71) during his freshman season.
"The one thing we know about Avery is he will come to work every day," Texas coach Rick Barnes said. "Trust me, work ethic is a skill and talent that is respected and admired at all levels. Avery also enjoys the challenge of guarding the ball. The rest will all be up to Avery. He is just scratching the surface of what he can be when it comes to basketball."
Bradley is the 10th player in UT history to be selected in the first round and the 36th player overall since the NBA Draft began in 1947.
