AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Longhorns right-hand pitcher Chance Ruffin was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the Compensatory Round A of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Monday evening.
The Tigers used the 48th overall pick to pick the Longhorns' closer. It was the highest selection for a Texas player since Drew Stubbs (8th overall) and Kyle McCulloch (29th overall) were picked in the 2006 draft.
This season Ruffin leads NCAA Division I in ERA (0.73) and strikeouts per nine innings (14.01). He has posted a 6-1 record with 14 saves on the year. The northpaw is holding opponents to a .176 batting average and has yielded just 39 hits and 18 walks while striking out 96 over 61.2 innings.
The junior was selected to the Louisville Slugger's All-American First Team by Collegiate Baseball and was named First-Team All-Big 12. It marked his third consecutive season as All-Big 12 choice. He was a second-teamer as a freshman and was selected first-team last year.
For his career, Ruffin is 24-6 with 19 saves and a 2.32 ERA. He has 293 career strikeouts and is seven strikeouts away from becoming just the eighth pitcher in school history to reach the 300-strikeout plateau for a career.
The 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft covers three days. Rounds 2-30 will occur on Tuesday followed by Rounds 31-50 on Wednesday.
