JOPLIN, Mo. -- Texas rising junior Jean Andersen and Texas-Ex Josh Zavala notched a straight-set win over the top seed in the finals to claim the 16-team doubles draw Friday (July 23) at the ATP Joplin futures event.
Andersen (Pretoria, South Africa) and Zavala (Amarillo, Texas) teamed up for a 6-4, 6-3 win over the top-seeded tandem of Todd Paul and Maciek Sykut in the finals. It marks Zavala's first doubles title as a professional.
Paul, who ranks No. 289 in the ATP world doubles rankings, was a former All-American at Wake Forest. Sykut, who ranks No. 463 in doubles, was a four-year standout at Florida State.
Zavala finished his UT career in the spring as the second-winningest Longhorn in doubles play with 112 victories. He earned ITA doubles All-America honors last season with Dimitar Kutrovsky.
