Stephens continues to lead Women's Golf at NCAA Fall Preview
09.14.2010 | Women's Golf
Sept. 14, 2010
BRYAN, Texas -- Sophomore Haley Stephens (73-73) carded a pair of birdies in her final three holes of round two at the NCAA Fall Preview to lead the Texas Women's Golf team for the second day. Stephens is currently tied for 27th place with a 36-hole score of 2-over 146 at Traditions Club. As a team, the Longhorns are in 13th place at 21-over 597 (299-298).
The Fall Preview field boasts 13 teams that competed in the 2010 NCAA Women's Golf Championship and is being contested at the site of the 2011 national championship hosted by Texas A&M.
Fighting temperatures in the high 90s and intense humidity, Stephens played her first five holes at even par. A bogey on the 15th hole - her sixth of the day - was the only blemish on her back nine. Stephens found trouble on the second and third holes where she made back-to-back bogeys and climbed to 3-over. Looking for a strong finish, Texas' first-round leader sank a pair of birdies on the seventh and eighth holes before making par on nine to finish the day at 1-over 73.
Junior Nicole Vandermade (75-74) trails Stephens by three strokes and is tied for 42nd place at 5-over 149. Sophomore Katelyn Sepmoree (76-74) improved her first-round score by two strokes and is at 6-over 150 and tied for 48th. Sophomore Desiree Dubreuil (75-77=152, +8) is tied for 62nd and freshman Rebecca Lee-Bentham (81-77=158, +14) is in 82nd place.
Texas continued to lose ground on the front nine of Traditions Club. The Longhorns were 7-over on the first nine holes on Tuesday and 9-over in the same stretch during Monday's first round.
Alabama climbed atop the team leaderboard with a second-round score of 8-under 280. The Crimson Tide (286-280) set a course record for 36 holes with their 10-under 566. LSU (287-283) and Southern California (289-282) round out the top three teams at 570 (-6) and 571 (-5), respectively.
The Longhorns will begin Wednesday's final round at 8:24 a.m. Central on the 10th hole. UT will be paired with 14th-place Michigan State (299-300=603, +23) and 15th-place Texas A&M (297-306=603, +27).

POST-ROUND QUOTES
Head coach Martha Richards
On the team's second-round performance: Today's rounds were an improvement over yesterday. I felt like we managed ourselves better today. We still need to roll a few more putts in. We haven't gotten hot on the greens yet. What's separating us from the teams we're close to in the standings is that we haven't had a round under par yet. This course is receptive to shooting under-par rounds, and it's just a matter of time before someone gets hot for us and scores that under-par round we're looking for.
