AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Soccer team used a lone goal in the second minute from redshirt freshman Leah Fortune to hand 10th-ranked BYU its first loss of the season, 1-0, on a rainy Monday night out at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Texas moves to 6-1-1 on the season while the Cougars are now 7-1-1.
Fortune netted her third goal of the season one minute and 44 seconds into the match when she connected on a cross from sophomore Sophie Campise. Campise sent the ball in from the left side over two BYU defenders where Fortune was able to tap it in past BYU keeper McKenzie Olson to the lower right corner of the net.
The goal was the fastest scored by a Longhorn since Nov. 11, 2007 when Emily Anderson scored just one minute and 12 seconds into the match against Texas A&M in the final of the Big 12 Championship.
The win over the Cougars, who are ranked No. 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, marks the first time since 2006 that an unranked Longhorns squad has knocked off an opponent ranked in the top 10 nationally by the NSCAA. In 2006, Texas upset No. 3 Penn State, 2-1 (Sept. 1). Texas is currently receiving votes in the 2010 NSCAA poll but has not entered the top 25 this season.
The victory over BYU also marks Texas' second-straight win over a ranked opponent (W vs. No. 22 William & Mary), marking the first time since 2006 that the Horns have upset nationally-ranked squads in back-to-back matches. In addition, Texas posted its third shutout of the season behind four saves from sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Gaul.
The Longhorns will have a short week of practice before heading to Nebraska to open Big 12 Conference play on Friday, Sept. at 4:30 p.m. Central. Texas wraps up the weekend at Colorado on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.

POST MATCH QUOTES
Redshirt freshman forward Leah Fortune
On the team's performance: We came out with a win and that is always encouraging and great, ultimately the score is what is important at the end of the day. The weather was a big factor and the change in the positioning but we responded really well and we are going to continually get better from this and it was a good challenge that we overcame.
On the goal: It was raining and I knew I had to be in the box. We had a good pre-game warm up and that depends a lot on how the game is going to go. We had a lot of energy coming in and what is more important is that our team held it and we led the entire game That says a lot about the team and what we did together.
Senior defender Erica Campanelli
On mindset moving form outside to inside: Yes the mindset is definitely different. You go from more of an attacking mentality to a defensive mentality. There's a lot more leadership at center back you have to communicate and keep everyone in check, so it is a little different feel.
On the teams response to adjustments and weather: I think the team did awesome I was really proud of our girls tonight. When it is raining you just have to get your body behind the ball and make sure everything is high, wide and far in the back and play it safe and on top take a lot of risks and that is how we got our goal in the first couple minutes of the game.
Head Coach Chris Petrucelli
On the win at this point in the season and how it reflects on your team: It is a good one for us against a quality opponent especially since we were able to fight through some weather conditions against a good team. I feel good about where we are at the moment.
On the team's offense: It was hard in the first half when it was raining a lot because we were trying to play and keep the ball. But when it is wet, the ball skips off people's feet and it is hard to get a strike on the ball, so I think that affected us pretty much the whole game especially in the first half. Then in the second half when we were up one nothing, we were just trying to get out of here with a win.
