LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Texas Soccer team suffered its second loss of the season, dropping a 2-1 contest in its Big 12 opener at Nebraska, Friday evening. The Longhorns move to 6-2-1 on the season and 0-1-0 in Big 12 action, while the Huskers are now 8-2-0 and 1-0-0 in league play.
A flurry of second-half goals in a span of two and a half minutes proved to be the difference in the game with Nebraska striking first in the 59th minute. Sophomore Morgan Marlborough took a free kick from 30 yards out on the far left side that forced UT keeper Alexa Gaul to make a diving attempt but the ball went under her into the back of the net by the far post.
Texas responded just a minute and a half after in the 60th minute off of a goal from redshirt freshman Leah Fortune. Fortune received the ball from junior Stacey-Ann Smith who had flicked it over to her from a throw in. The forward brought the ball up before firing a shot into the upper far corner from just outside the 18-yard box for her fourth goal of the season.
Just seconds later in the 61st minute, Texas was called with a penalty in its own box setting up a PK for Marlborough. The sophomore connected, sending it to the left corner of the net for the game winner.
The Huskers held the shot advantage throughout the game, 17-8, and forced Gaul to make a career-high tying seven saves.
The Longhorns continue their two-game road stand with a 2 p.m. CT match at Colorado Sunday, Sept. 26.
