STILLWATER, Okla. - The Texas Longhorns played the No. 2 Oklahoma State Cowgirls to a 1-1 double-overtime tie at the Cowgirls Soccer Complex on Friday night.
The Longhorns drew first blood in the fourth minute of action. Taylor Knaack worked the ball into the penalty box from the top right corner and weaved within seven yards of the end line before drilling a cross. The cross was threaded between the Cowgirls' netminder Adrianna Franch and a defender and onto the foot of Kristin Cummins who knocked it into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
After yielding just its fifth goal of the season, Oklahoma State found itself trailing for the first time all season. The Cowgirls were unable to balance the ledger before halftime and the Longhorns took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Oklahoma State tallied the equalizer in the 12th minute of the second half. Krista Lopez dumped a long pass down the left flank. Megan Marchesano tracked down the pass, beat one defender and launched a shot from 15 yards out to the far upper ninety for her fifth goal of the season.
Both teams had opportunities to break the tie before the end of regulation. The Longhorns' best chances came on a laser off the foot of Lexi Harris from 12 yards out and a free kick from Nina Frausing Pedersen from 25 yards out. Franch corralled Harris' shot and tipped Pedersen's over the goal.
Texas gained a second wind in the first overtime session, peppering the goal area with four shots, to just one for Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls managed the only two shot attempts of the second overtime period.
The statistics reflected a game that was played on an even keel for 110 minutes as both teams rifled off 19 shots and had six corner kick opportunities.
Alexa Gaul went the entire distance in goal for the Longhorns, making five saves. She also squelched no less than four Oklahoma State scoring opportunities with intercepted crosses.
The Longhorns record moved to 9-5-1 on the year and 3-2-1 in Big 12 play. With 10 points, Texas remained in fourth place in the league standings. The Cowgirls moved to 15-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in Big 12 play. Oklahoma State stayed atop the conference standings with 13 points.
Texas returns to action on Sunday when the Longhorns travel to Lubbock, Texas for a 7 p.m. contest against the Texas Tech Lady Raiders.
