LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Longhorns dropped a double-overtime 3-2 decision against the Texas Tech Lady Raiders at John Walker Soccer Complex on Sunday evening.
The Longhorns nearly pulled out the victory in the first overtime period. Texas goalkeeper Alexa Gaul, who scored her second career goal earlier in the contest, took a free kick from 30 yards out and nailed the crossbar with what would have been the walk-off goal.
Granted a second life, the Lady Raiders regrouped and sent the game to a second overtime. Texas Tech pulled out the win when its leading scorer Jessica Fuston took a shot from 14 yards out with heavy traffic in the penalty box. With Gaul's view obstructed, the ball approached her line of sight late allowing the ball to elude her dive to the left.
With Texas trailing 2-1, Gaul knotted the ball with 3:01 remaining in the second half. She took a penalty kick from 30 yards out left of center on the pitch and sent the ball into the net on the far post.
Texas Tech broke a 1-1 tie by capitalizing on one of its 11 corner kick chances. Taylor Lytle sent the ball into play and found Casey McCall for her third goal of the season with 7:23 remaining in the second half.
The Longhorns tied the game into the second half. The Red Raiders were unable to clean up a mess in the penalty box. Vanessa Ibewuike collected the ball and passed it off to Nina Frausing Pedersen. Pedersen sent it into the net on the left post from 12 yards out for the equalizer.
The Lady Raiders drew first blood the 40th minute of action when Jessica Disabella scored an unassisted goal.
With the loss, Texas dropped to 9-6-1 overall and 3-3-1 in Big 12 play. Texas Tech improved to 10-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in league action.
Texas returns to action next Sunday when the Longhorns host the Seattle Redhawks in a 1 p.m. contest at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
