Stanford, Calif. -- Junior Madison Pressel (70-67=137, -5) led the Texas Women's Golf team with a 4-under-par 67 in Saturday's second round of the Stanford Intercollegiate to surge into a tie for fifth place after 36 holes. Pressel began the day tied for 13th place and cracked the individual leaderboard top five after a round that included five birdies alongside a lone bogey.
Pressel's front nine mimicked her scorecard from yesterday with a birdie on the fourth hole, a bogey on the fifth and seven pars to turn at an even 35. On the backside, she found birdies on the 11th, 15th, 16th and 18thholes to finish the day at 4-under.
Pressel, the reigning Big 12 Women's Golfer of the Year, has been know to go low on the Stanford Golf Course before. She set Texas' single-round record of 6-under 65 as a freshman on the first day of the 2009 Stanford Intercollegiate in just the third tournament of her collegiate career.
Senior Nicole Vandermade (68-73) carded UT's second-lowest round with a 2-over 73 and is tied for 18th place at 1-under 141. Junior Desiree Dubreuil (75-74=149) is tied for 63rd place and junior Haley Stephens (74-76) is one stroke back and tied for 67th.
Freshman Bertine Strauss withdrew midway through her round due to illness. She remains at 5-over 76 after Friday's first round. Strauss is eligible to compete for the Longhorns on Sunday and contribute to the team score. Junior Katelyn Sepmoree (72-76=148) is tied for 59th place while competing as an individual.
UCLA improved upon its first-round lead with a 5-under 279 to climb to 12-under 556. Vanderbilt (281-279) and Oregon (282-281) are four and seven strokes behind, respectively, in second and third places. Texas (287-290) is tied for 10th place in the 16-team field.
The Longhorns are set to begin Sunday's final round at 9:30 a.m. Central on the first tee alongside San Diego State and UC Davis.
