Top-seeded Volleyball sweeps past Texas State in NCAA First Round

AUSTIN, Texas - The top-seeded Texas Volleyball team knocked off Texas State in straight sets, Friday night to advance to the second round of the 2011 NCAA Volleyball Championship. The 25-15, 25-23, 25-15 victory moved the Longhorns into the second round where they will meet Michigan State (22-11) who advanced after defeating Arizona in first round action.
Texas' win improved the Horns to 23-4 on the year and 28-0 all-time in opening round matches of the NCAA Championship. The Longhorns now own a 63-26 record in 28 NCAA Championship appearances.
National freshman of the year candidate Haley Eckerman highlighted the Texas attack with 16 kills on .433 hitting and chipped in two service aces in the win, while sophomore outside hitter Bailey Webster hammered out 11 kills on 19 error-free swings and hit at a .579 clip.
In the first, Texas used three early kills by Adams to claim an early lead and following three-straight Eckerman kills that fueled a 5-0 run, UT took a 19-11 lead. Texas stretched the margin to 10 late in the set and closed out the frame, 25-15 on Adams' fourth kill of the set.
Texas slugged it out with Texas State (27-8) in a second stanza that saw 16 tie scores and seven lead changes. The Horns used a double-block by Adams and Hannah Allison to claim a 22-21 lead and they closed out the set 25-23 courtesy of a kill by Webster and an Adams/Eckerman double-block.
The Horns started slow in the third until a 10-2 run headlined by six Eckerman kills gave the Horns a 23-14 lead. Another kill by Eckerman forced set point before a Madelyn Hutson/Webster block sealed the set and the match, 25-15.
Texas returns to action in the NCAA Second Round on Saturday when it plays host to Michigan State. First serve is set for 7 p.m. Central on Longhorn Network.
