CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Sophomore rightfielder Taylor Hoagland extended her hitting streak to 26 games and set a new Big 12 hitting streak record as the 11th-ranked Texas Softball team shutout Long Island, 10-0 and Loyola Marymount, 6-0 at the Cathedral City Classic. The wins improved the Longhorns to 13-2 on the season, while LIU dropped to 2-10 and LMU to 5-6.
Hoagland registered a single and a run scored in the Horns win over the Blackbirds and added a single and another run against the Lions. Her 26-game hitting streak breaks the 25-game mark set by Nebraska's Anne Steffan in 2005. The sophomore has now hit safely in 63 of her 73 career games at Texas.
In the win over Long Island, freshman righthander Rachel Fox (5-1) fired the first complete-game shutout of her career, allowing three hits and striking out eight in 5.0 innings of work. Blackbirds' starter Sarah Reynolds (2-5) took the loss after surrendering 10 runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings.
Sophomore hurler Blaire Luna (8-1) tossed her fourth complete-game shutout of the season in Texas' win over LMU, allowing four hits in 7.0 innings and striking out 11. LMU starter Dana Waldusky (2-3) suffered the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits and walking four in 5.0 innings of action.
Texas has now held its opponents scoreless over the last 19.0 innings of play.
Junior first baseman Lexy Bennett headlined the UT offense on the day and extended her hitting streak to nine games. She totaled three hits, four runs scored and one RBI on the day.
Texas returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 27 when it concludes play at the Cathedral City Classic against UMass. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. Central.
Game 1: Texas 10, Long Island 0
The Longhorns claimed an early 1-0 lead in the first when Bennett reached on a single and came home on senior catcher Amy Hooks' RBI double. Texas kept the heat on in the third, sending nine hitters to the plate and pushing six runs across. Hoagland and Washington led off the frame with back-to-back singles and they both moved into scoring position on a double steal. An errant throw by LIU on a fielder's choice scored one run before a Hooks RBI single and a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman Nadia Taylor widened the lead to 4-0.
A three-run homer by senior second baseman Raygan Feight capped the scoring in the third and moved the lead to seven. The Horns tacked on three more in the fourth, using an RBI single by freshman pinch hitter Karina Scott and a two-run homer by freshman catcher Mandy Ogle to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
Game 2: Texas 6, LMU 0
Texas jumped out to an early in the first, taking advantage of a one-out walk by Washington to start the rally. After stealing second she moved to third on a single by Bennett and came home on Hooks' RBI single. UT added a second run when Taylor's sacrifice fly scored Bennett to move the score to 2-0.
The Horns posted another tally in the second when freshman shortstop Taylor Thom blasted her third homer of the season to give UT a 3-0 edge. Taylor added two more runs in the third, lacing a two-run home run to left centerfield to extend the lead to five. In the fifth, a sacrifice fly by Bennett plated the final run and sealed the win, 6-0.
