AUSTIN, Texas - No. 5 Texas (11-1) captured the doubles point and swept the six singles matches en route to a 7-0 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tuesday evening at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Texas opened the match by claiming the doubles point for the 11th time in 12 matches. At second doubles, the Islanders' duo of Robert Raguz and Nathan Robinson kept it close against the Horns' Chris Camillone and Vasko Mladenov. But, with a 5-4 lead, Camillone and Mladenov surrendered nothing the rest of the way and took the match, 8-4.
Texas' Kellen Damico and David Holiner held a 6-4 lead over the Islanders' Laurent Montoisy and Gergo Weidinger at first doubles before A&M-Corpus Christi evened the match at six. Damico and Holiner broke the Islanders' serve for a 7-6 lead, and the Horns took the following game on Damico's serve and won the match, 8-6. With a 6-4 lead at third doubles, UT's Alex Hilliard and Daniel Whitehead broke the serve of James Langford and Aurelien Tave to assume a 7-4 lead. The Horns held serve in the final game to take the match, 8-4.
Damico quickly extended the Texas lead to 2-0 after dispatching the Islanders' Langford at second singles, 6-1, 6-0. UT's Mladenov pushed the Longhorns' lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Raguz at third singles. Texas' 29th-ranked Corrie clinched the victory for the Longhorns at the first slot, where he locked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over the Islanders' Montoisy.
UT's Whitehead blanked the Islanders' Tave in the first set at fourth singles, but Tave managed to force a tiebreaker in the second set. Whitehead put away Tave in the tiebreaker, 7-1 to push the Texas lead to 5-0. UT freshman Sudanwa Sitaram rallied from one set down to force a third set match tiebreak against Weidinger and prevailed 10-7 to give Texas its sixth point. Texas' Holiner outlasted the Islanders' Matt Westmoreland at fifth singles, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to close out the match.
Texas resumes play next Tuesday, March 8 when it hosts North Carolina.
POST-MEET COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
"Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has a very good team. We did some things really well tonight, and we did some things that we need to improve upon. But overall, I think this team continues to get better. Our young guys are getting matches in, and our older guys were really good tonight. It was a good win, and now we have a week to get ready for North Carolina."
