COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Junior Mia Behm and freshman Shanay Briscoe each posted second-place finishes on the first day of the 2011 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships to lead the Texas Women's Team, Friday evening in College Station. The Longhorns currently sit in second with 23 points heading into the final day.
Behm clocked a 16:08.56 in the 5,000m to become the first Longhorn to place in the indoor event since 1990. She is just the third in Texas history to score and her second-place finish ties the best by Longhorn (Trina Leopold, 1989).
Briscoe led a pair of Texas high jumpers to finish in the top eight Friday afternoon with her personal-best clearance of 6-1.50 (1.87m). Briscoe is the fifth Longhorn in NCAA Indoor history to finish in the top three. Joining her on the awards podium was junior Victoria Lucas who also set a personal-best (6-0.25, 1.84m) en route to picking up a sixth-place finish. It marks the first time in Texas history that the Longhorns have placed two in the top eight. Senior Chantel Malone scored in the indoor long jump for second-straight year with her fifth-place finish. Malone posted a 20-9.25 (6.33m).
In the 400m prelims, junior Angele Cooper qualified to Saturday's final with her fifth-place time of 52.91. Cooper, an All-American in the 400m hurdles, will run Saturday at 5:40 p.m. CT.
Oregon leads the team race with 26 points while LSU is third with 19 points followed by Tennessee (16 points) in fourth and Texas A&M and Indiana State in fifth with 12 points.
Competing on the second and final day of the national meet will be Malone in the triple jump (4:30 p.m.), Cooper in the 400m, and the Horns' 4x400m relay (7:10 p.m.).
POST MEET QUOTES
Junior Mia Behm
On finishing second: I'm just so excited to have finished second. It seems surreal, like I can't believe that it happened. But I'm excited to be able to represent my university and my team and earn the eight points. After finishing seventh at conference, I knew I had to come out and have a good race, and thankfully today I did.
Freshman Shanay Briscoe:
On finishing second: It feels really good. I of course wanted to win but it does feel good to be able to place so high. I was really comfortable out there today and hitting a PR was definitely a goal of mine so I'm glad I got that along with getting eight points for my team
