No. 12 Softball downs Long Beach State, 1-0

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Texas Softball team received a complete-game shutout effort by sophomore hurler Blaire Luna and used a solo homer by senior catcher Amy Hooks to down Long Beach State, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at the 49er Softball Complex. The victory improved the Longhorns to 19-3 overall and dropped the 49ers to 16-9.
Luna (12-2) fired her seventh shutout of the year in the win, while scattering four hits, walking two and fanning 11 in 7.0 innings of work. Long Beach State starter Brooke Turner (6-2) was saddled with the loss after surrendering one run on one hit, walking four and striking out seven in 4.0 innings of action.
After a scoreless first inning, Texas took a 1-0 advantage in the second when Hooks led off the inning with a line-drive homer to left field. The Horns stranded two runners later in the frame, but failed to push either across.
Texas mounted threats again the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, stranding a pair of runners in each frame. The Longhorns left four runners in scoring position in the three-inning span.
Joining Hooks in the hit column were junior first baseman Lexy Bennett and junior third baseman Nadia Taylor.
Texas returns to action on Thursday, March 16 when it commences play at the Judi Garman Classic at Cal State Fullerton. The Horns take on DePaul in opening round action at 3 p.m. Central and later in the day they meet No. 4/4 Washington at 7:30 p.m. Central.
