LINCOLN, Neb. - No. 25 Texas (13-6, 8-2 Big 12) claimed the doubles point and added four singles victories in a 5-2 victory at No. 34 Nebraska (17-5, 5-3 Big 12) in a Friday afternoon indoor match at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
Texas opened the contest by winning matches at the first and second doubles positions to claim the doubles point. UT's Amanda Craddock and Cierra Gaytan-Leach led off with an 8-6 win at first doubles over Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein. The Horns clinched the doubles point at the second position, where Krista Damico and Aeriel Ellis held on for an 8-5 win over Patricia Veresova and Janine Weinreich. UT's Juliana Gajic and Maggie Mello finished off the doubles session at the third slot with an 8-7 win over Jennifer Holmberg and Maike Zeppernick.
Nebraska evened the tally at one when Weinstein posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over UT's Mello at third singles. But, Texas went on to claim four consecutive singles wins to clinch its victory over the Huskers. Texas' Gajic staked UT to a 2-1 lead after posting a 6-2, 6-0 win over NU's Holmberg at fifth singles. Texas' Gaytan-Leach collected her fifth consecutive singles win and pushed the Longhorns' lead to 3-1 after dealing Frederike Putthoff a 6-2, 6-2 defeat at sixth singles.
The Longhorns clinched the victory at second singles, where UT's 23rd-ranked Ellis knocked off NU's Veresova by a 6-3, 6-4 count. Craddock added on to the Texas lead at fourth singles, where she registered a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6) win over Nebraska's Weinreich. NU's Geibert held on for a 6-4, 7-6 win over UT's Damico at first singles to close out the match.
Texas finishes off the regular season on Saturday when it takes on host Iowa State at 2:30 p.m. Central. A Texas victory likely would lock up a first-round bye for the Longhorns at the Big 12 Championships to be held later this month in Waco.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Patty Fendick-McCain
"We played very well in doubles today. We got off to a slow start at No. 3 and got down 4-1, but they got it together, came back and got the win. It was nice to get the sweep. We've been working hard on our doubles. In singles, we had great, great tennis at the fifth and sixth spots. Juliana Gajic turned the corner last weekend, and Cierra Gaytan-Leach played a great match. Aeriel Ellis played really well, and Krista Damico battled at No. 1 and came up a little short. Maggie Mello had a tough one today, and Amanda Craddock battled back and got the win. It was a good day. Any day you get a win here is a good day. Nebraska is comfortable indoors in its home facility, but I'm proud of these ladies for getting the win."
