Sophomore All-America righthander Blaire Luna tossed her NCAA-best 14th complete-game shutout to help the Longhorns stay unbeaten in the Big 12 and upend No. 17 Baylor, 3-0, Wednesday night at Getterman Stadium. The win improved the Horns to 43-4 and 12-0 in Big 12 play, while the Bears dropped to 36-11 overall and 7-6 in league action.
Luna (25-2) scattered three hits, walked three and fanned 10 in 7.0 innings of work to notch her 55th career victory. Baylor starter Whitney Canion (20-8) took the loss after surrendering three runs on six hits, walking four and striking out four in 4.1 innings.
Senior catcher Amy Hooks highlighted the Horns' offense in the win, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, one RBI and her team-best 12th home run of the season. Sophomore first baseman Kim Bruins added two hits and an RBI in the winning effort.
After being held scoreless over the first three frames, Texas pushed two runs across in the fourth to claim a 2-0 edge. Hooks led off the inning with a single to right field and junior leftfielder Courtney Craig drew a two-out walk to put two on. Bruins quickly added an RBI single through the middle that scored Hooks and broke the scoreless tie. Senior second baseman Raygan Feight followed with a walk that loaded the bases and sophomore rightfielder Taylor Hoagland drew a bases-loaded walk to bring Craig home and put UT ahead, 2-0.
The Longhorns added to the margin in the fifth, taking advantage of a one-out solo homer by Hooks to widen the lead to three.
Texas returns to action on Saturday, April 30 when it plays host to No. 15/14 Oklahoma at McCombs Field. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. Central on ESPN.
POST-GAME NOTES
- Texas' win improved its all-time record against Baylor to 19-10 and 9-4 in Waco.
- Blaire Luna's complete-game shutout was her 14th of the season, which ties for the most in the NCAA in 2011. It was the 25th shutout of her two-year career.
- Amy Hooks recorded her 12th multi-hit game of the season in the victory.
- Kim Bruins extended her career-best hitting streak to five games in the win.
