EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Texas sophomore Marquise Goodwin won the 2011 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field long jump national title Saturday afternoon at Hayward Field to earn a spot in Team USA at the 2011 IAAF World Championships held in Daegu, Korea, August 27-Sept 4. Joining Goodwin in advancing to the world meet was Texas Ex Leonel Manzano in the 1,500m.
Goodwin posted his winning jump of a personal-best 27-4 (8.33m/2.1w) on his fourth attempt. The title is Goodwin's first at the senior level after having claimed the junior title in the event in 2009 and 2008. This will be the sophomore's first trip to the World Championships. He is a two-time World Junior Champion in the long jump and 4x100m.
Manzano posted a time of 3:48.16 to grab third place in a tightly contested 1,500m. For most the race Manzano was in the middle of the pack, but sprinted to the finish line while overtaking the majority of the field. His third place finish will send him to the World Championships for the third time.
Longhorns competing in tomorrow's events are Hayden Baillio and Jacob Thormaehlen in the shot put (2:55 p.m. CT) and Texas Ex Andra Mason in the high jump (2:20 p.m.CT).
Fans can tune into Universal from 2-3 p.m. CT, and then on NBC from 4-5 p.m. CT for all of the action.
