STANFORD, Calif. - In just his third competition since the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Texas-Ex Brendan Hansen captured the U.S. national title in the 100-meter breaststroke Tuesday evening on day one of the 2011 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships.
Hansen, who won NCAA titles in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events in each of his four seasons as a Longhorn (2001-04), claimed the 100-meter breaststroke Tuesday evening in 1:00.08. The two-time Olympic gold medalist qualified first in the 126-swimmer preliminary round in 1:00.17.
Hansen, who continues to train at The University of Texas under head coach Eddie Reese and assistant coach Kris Kubik, returned to competition in June at the USA Swimming Santa Clara Grand Prix, his first meet since the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he won gold in the 400-meter medley relay.
UT rising senior Eric Friedland placed eighth in the 100m breaststroke in 1:01.74. Last March, Friedland became UT's first NCAA champion in the 200 breaststroke since Hansen in 2004.
Texas-Ex Michael Klueh took second in the 400m freestyle at 3:48.48. UT rising junior Michael McBroom placed fifth in 3:49.94, and UT rising senior Jackson Wilcox placed sixth in 3:51.02.
