AUSTIN, Texas - Coming off a 1-0 victory over No. 22 Oklahoma State, the Texas Soccer program looks to extend its unbeaten streak to six matches Friday with a 5:30 p.m. contest versus Texas Tech. Last Friday's victory over the Cowgirls lifted UT to its first 3-0-0 start in Big 12 Conference play since 2002, when the squad opened the year 9-0-0 in league action.
For the contest against the Red Raiders, UT Athletics and Whataburger will team up to give fans the opportunity to fight hunger by donating non-perishable food items. Fans who provide five non-perishable food items receive a Texas Sports DVD and a coupon for a FREE Whataburger. Collection takes place at the UT Athletics table located near the Gate 1 entrance (northeast corner of Myers Stadium). Fans must purchase a ticket to the match in order to receive the DVD and coupon (offer based on availability).
Entering this weekend's competition, UT is the only member of the Big 12 to have not allowed a goal in league action. The Longhorns have shut out opponents over the last 295:47 as Denver's Kristen Hamilton owns the last goal for a foe, at 84:13 to tie the match at 3-3 on Sept. 16.
Texas Tech began the season at 5-0 for its best start since 2010, aided by the return of 19 letterwinners and nine starters from the 2011 campaign. Sophomore midfielder Paige Strahan was named the Oct. 2 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and leads the Red Raiders with four game-winning goals. Helping carry the offensive load is freshman forward Janine Beckie, who owns squad-best marks in shots (79), shots on goal (33), points (21) and goals (nine). Junior goalkeeper Victoria Esson has posted a 1.13 goals against average and tallied a league second-best 57 saves.
Texas caps the home stand Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest versus Kansas (8-4-2, 2-2-0 Big 12).
