LAWRENCE, Kan. - Quarterback Case McCoy hit tight end D.J. Grant for the 1-yard game-winning touchdown with 12 seconds left lifting No. 24 Texas to a 21-17 victory over Kansas Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
The Jayhawks (1-7, 0-5 Big 12) took a 17-14 lead on a 29-yard field goal by Nick Prolago with 2:28 left in the game, but Texas (6-2, 3-2) drove 70 yards to avoid the upset.
McCoy, who came off the bench in the fourth quarter to replace starter David Ash, led two scoring drives in the final 10 minutes.
McCoy made two key throws to get Texas in scoring position on its final possession. On fourth-and-6 from the UT 34, the junior found wide receiver Jaxon Shipley for 18 yards and one play later connected with Mike Davis for 39 yards down the left sideline to set up first-and-goal.
Two runs by Johnathan Gray set up third-and-goal at the 1. McCoy, who completed 6 of 8 passes for 109 yards, faked a handoff and found a wide open Grant in the end zone
Kansas had one last possession, but got the ball on its own 27 and had two Michael Cummings' passes fall incomplete.
Texas tied the game at 14-all with 9:41 remaining on an 11-yard touchdown run by wide receiver Marquise Goodwin who helped set up the score when he took a shovel pass from McCoy 41 yards down the right sideline to the KU 31. Joe Bergeronput the offense in the red zone with a 17-yard run.
The Longhorns got off to a strong start, forcing a punt on Kansas' first possession of the game and scoring in four plays.
Gray, who finished the game with a career-high 111 rushing yards, ran for 31 yards on the Horns' first offensive play. Two plays later, Bergeron plowed in from the 3 for the touchdown, his 15th rushing score of the season.
But Kansas used a strong rushing attack to take control of the game in the second quarter.
James Sims, who had a game-high 176 rushing yards, set up the tying score with a 64-yard scamper up the middle when the Jayhawks were backed up inside their 10. Two plays after that gallop, Chris Matthews scored on a 15-yard run.
The Jayhawks took a 14-7 lead with 7:16 left in the second quarter when Tony Pierson found the end zone on an 11-yard run.
Defensive end Alex Okafor led the Texas defensive effort with 13 tackles, while safety Kenny Vaccaro and linebacker Steve Edmond added 11 tackles each.
Ash was 8-for-16 for 63 yards with two interceptions. Shipley had a game-high six receptions for 66 yards.
