LAWRENCE, Kan. - Junior outside hitter Bailey Webster tied season highs with 17 kills and five blocks as the No. 3 Texas Longhorns defeated the No. 23 Kansas Jayhawks, 3-2 (20-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-16, 15-12), in a Big 12 match. The Longhorns won their 15th straight match to clinch at least a share of the Big 12 title with three matches remaining in the season.
Haley Eckerman added 16 kills, 15 digs, three service aces and two blocks while Khat Bell had a season-high 14 kills while hitting .419 with six blocks. Hannah Allison had 56 assists, four kills and seven digs while junior libero Sarah Palmer tied a season high with 24 digs.
Texas improved to 21-3 overall, 13-0 in conference while Kansas fell to 21-6 overall, 9-4 in Big 12 play. The Longhorns handed the Jayhawks their first home loss (13-1) this season.
Caroline Jarmoc led all players with 18 kills for the Jayhawks while Sara Mcclinton had 11 kills. Tayler Tolefree added seven kills and seven blocks.
Three straight points by the Jayhawks helped to build a 10-6 lead in the first set. Tolefree and Catherine Carmichael went back-to-back kills as the lead went to five, 13-8. Webster brought UT within two at 18-16, but a service error sparked a 4-1 run for Kansas as Jarmoc would later put one down the middle as KU won the first set.
Molly McCage had two straight kills for the 4-3 Texas lead in set two. Bell figured in three of four kills as Texas had the 10-6 advantage. Texas later scored five straight with two more kills from Bell for the 23-12 lead as Eckerman would tie the match for the Longhorns on her sixth kill of the evening.
Trailing 10-8 in the third, Jarmoc was the key to help the Jayhawks score four straight points for the 12-10 lead. Texas retook the lead at 14-13, but the Jayhawks used an 8-2 run to take over and earn a 2-1 lead in the match. The Longhorns would come out in set four similar to the second set, using eight blocks to send the match into the fifth and deciding set.
With a 5-5 score in the fifth, miscommunication by the Jayhawks put the Longhorns ahead. Eckerman then hit a kill off the back corner, followed by a block from McCage and McNeal for the 8-5 Texas lead on the side switch. After a timeout, Mcclinton and Tolefree stuffed a Texas attempt and a UT hitting error closed the gap to one, 8-7. Allison's sneak kill gave Texas a 10-8 lead as Eckerman added another ace to help put the match away. Webster finished the match with her final kill to secure the victory.
Texas returns home to face Texas Tech on Wednesday (Nov. 14) in a 7 p.m. match that will be broadcast live on Longhorn Network. Gametracker live stats will be available on TexasSports.com and a live Twitter feed @TexasVolleyball.
