AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas Softball team used a big second inning to defeat Pittsburgh 7-2. The game started Friday afternoon, but was suspended due to inclement weather, and play resumed Saturday afternoon before weather forced the game to be called in the bottom of the fifth inning at Red & Charline McCombs Field.
With the win, Texas improved to 7-0 on the year and the Pitt Panthers drop to 1-1.
The Longhorns got off to a strong start in the first inning when their first two batters, Taylor Hoagland and Brejae Washington, were able to get on base. Two stolen bases advanced both runners and then Hoagland was able to score due to a throwing error. Lexy Bennett then recorded her 14th RBI of the season by bringing in Washington on a sacrifice fly.
UT scored four more runs on three hits in the bottom of the second. Taylor Thom opened up the inning with a single and come around to score on Mandy Ogle's RBI single up the middle. Karina Scott advanced Ogle to third on a right center double. Ogle was then able to score on Hoagland's fielder's choice RBI. Bennett then walked on an illegal pitch, which plated Scott, and then Hoagland scored on another throwing error to cap the four-run inning.
The game remained 6-0 until Texas gave two back in the top of the fourth when Texas pitcher Kim Bruins gave up a two-run homerun to Pitt's Maggie Sevilla.
Courtney Craig added one more in the fifth with a solo homerun just before the game was called due to rain.
With the win Bruins picks up her second win of the year. She is 2-0 on the year with a 1.40 era and six strikeouts in 10 innings of work.
Texas returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 11:30 a.m. against No. 10 Tennessee at Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin, Texas, following Pittsburgh playing Illinois at 9:30 a.m.
The Longhorns will also face Illinois at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Texas Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Connie Clark
On keeping the team prepared during the suspended play: I told them that our sport is all about going with the flow, and sometimes it is hurry up and wait. They did a great job with that. Sometimes it was "Come on and warm up," and then it was "Now, head to the locker room and stay warm." We are blessed to have great facilities, so that gives us a great opportunity to stay warm and go and hit in the covered area. The facilities are very helpful, but the team did a great job and had a great mind set. I told them to be ready to go when the bell rings.
On Kim Bruins bouncing back after giving up a two-run home run: She did a great job. I am sure she is disappointed, she probably left the ball a little over the plate and hitters at this level are good. That is one thing she does so well. She competes. I love that. She came back and went right back at them. That is part of the reason she is doing such great things for us.
On preparing for tomorrow: I told them to get ready and hydrate, because it is looking like we are playing two tomorrow.
