HOUSTON - The No. 6 Texas Longhorns used a season-high four home runs Wednesday in a 15-4 run-rule, five-inning win over the host Houston Cougars. The Longhorns scored eight runs in the first and seven runs in the fifth inning as Karina Scott and Mandy Ogle both hit grand slams.
Scott went 2-for-3 with a career-high five RBI while Ogle tied her previous best with four RBI. Taylor Hoagland registered two home runs in the game for the second time in the last five games while Courtney Craig recorded a career-high four hits, all singles, in a 4-for-4 night.
Tonight's game was the sixth annual Striking Out Breast Cancer, hosted by the Houston softball program, with money raised for the local Susan G. Komen affiliate. The crowd of 1,785 was the highest home attendance in the history of Houston softball.
In the first, Texas (27-2) put the first seven runners on base against UH starter Bailey Watts. Craig, Taylor Thom and Nadia Taylor hit consecutive singles to produce three runs before Scott launched her grand slam to right for the 7-0 lead and no outs. Hoagland then hit a solo shot to right center for the eight-run lead. Haley Outon cut into the lead for the Cougars (18-14) with a three-run homer off Gabby Smith. Jennifer Klinkert's sacrifice fly in the third made it 8-4 for Texas, but the Longhorns would put the game away in the fifth. After four straight singles to start the inning, Ogle hammered her grand slam over the fence in left to make it 13-4. Kim Bruins hit a pinch-hit single before Hoagland hit a line drive that hit the top of the fence in left center for her second homer of the game. Blaire Luna pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out three.
Texas begins a seven-game homestand on Friday against New Mexico at 5 p.m. with a live broadcast on Longhorn Network. Gametracker live stats, along with a live Twitter feed (@TexasSoftball), will be available on TexasSports.com.
