TEMPE, Ariz. -- Fueled by a career-low 2-under-par 69 by freshman Bertine Strauss and a 1-under 70 by senior Nicole Vandermade, the Texas Women's Golf team surged up the PING/ASU Invitational leaderboard on 'moving day' to tie for second place through two rounds. The Longhorns (289-285=574, +6) entered Saturday's second round tied for seventh place in the 17-team field but capitalized on the second-best team score of the day to make their ascent.
Strauss is poised for her best collegiate finish and is tied for fourth place at 1-under 141 (72-69). Vandermade (72-70) and junior Haley Stephens (70-72) could also collect top 10 finishes as they enter Sunday's final round at even-par 142 and tied for eighth place.
Including Strauss, Vandermade and Stephens, 10 players are within five shots of current leader Tiffany Lua (UCLA - 68-69=137).
Strauss dropped three strokes in as many holes when she birdied the fourth, fifth and sixth holes of Karsten Golf Course. A subsequent bogey on seven cost her a shot, but she found her fourth birdie opportunity on the ninth hole to turn at 3-under. Strauss made pars on eight of her final nine holes except for her second bogey of the day on 15.
Vandermade's second round also featured a stretch of three-straight birdies, but hers came on the back nine at holes 13, 14 and 15. Vandermade bogeyed the first and 10th holes to result in the 1-under scorecard.
Junior Desiree Dubreuil carded UT's first eagle of the year on the par-4 opening hole when she holed out on her approach. Dubreuil (75-74=149) and junior Madison Pressel (75-74) are tied for 48th place.
Texas trails 36-hole leader UCLA (284-281=565, -3) by nine strokes and shares second place with Texas A&M (287-287).
The Longhorns are set to begin Sunday's final round alongside the Bruins and Aggies beginning at 10:50 a.m. Central in eight-minute increments off the first tee.
