AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 6 Texas Longhorns scored six runs in the sixth inning to run-rule the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 9-1, in the first game of their two-game bill on Saturday at McCombs Field.
In the top of the first, Tulsa's (23-7) leadoff batter Caitlin Everett singled to left field. With one out, Samantha Cobb then hit a high pop-up to Taylor Thom, who committed an error, which allowed Cobb to reach second and Everett to score an unearned run, putting Tulsa up 0-1. After the run, Blaire Luna responded by striking out the next batter and inducing a pop up to first base.
In the bottom of the second and with one out, Nadia Taylor, Kim Bruins and Mandy Ogle hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Torie Schmidt then singled to put the Horns on the board for the first time. Hoagland followed up with another single to push Texas ahead of Tulsa, 2-1. Brejae Washington hit a sacrifice fly, which extended the Horns' lead to 3-1.
Texas (29-2) had a huge offensive effort to open up their lead in the top of the sixth. Taylor led off the inning with a walk, then Bruins and Ogle singled to load the bases with Schmidt up to bat. Schmidt singled to plate Gabby Smith, who pinch ran for Taylor, putting Texas up 4-1. The next batter, Taylor Hoagland walked with the bases loaded to score another run. Then Washington reached base on a fielder's choice by the shortstop, which retired Ogle at home plate. Bennett followed with another walk, to score Schmidt, and extend Texas' lead to 6-1. Courtney Craig followed with a two RBI double that left two runners in scoring position for Taylor Thom. Before Thom's at bat, Tulsa went to their bullpen, and Kalynn Schrock entered the game. Thom drove a single up the middle, which scored Texas' ninth run of the game, and ended the game, because of the eight-run rule
Blaire Luna earned her 11th win of the season, by striking out nine of the 23 batters she faced while walking only one and allowing three hits.
Craig, Bruins, Ogle and Schmidt each had two hits on three at bats. Craig hit the only extra base hit for the Longhorns, a double.
