AUSTIN, Texas - Lexy Bennett's RBI single in the third provided the eventual game-winning run Wednesday as the No. 6 Texas Longhorns defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 2-1, in Big 12 Conference action at McCombs Field. Rachel Fox (6-0) allowed just one run on two hits as the Longhorns swept the two-game conference series with the Red Raiders (both teams will complete the season series on Wednesday, April 11 in Lubbock).
Texas is now 19-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference as the Longhorns have now won nine straight games. The current 19-1 record matches the second-best start in school history as the 2003 squad also went 19-1 while the 2006 team opened with a school-record 26-1 mark.
Nadia Taylor opened the Texas second with a hard ground ball that bounced off Texas Tech pitcher Cara Custer's leg and the ensuing throw from Custer was wide of the bag as Taylor advanced to second. Mandy Ogle then hit a ground ball to short that allowed pinch-runner Gabby Smith to score the first run of the game. Brejae Washington led off the third inning with a single, stole second and scored when Bennett hit a ground ball through the right side for the 2-0 lead. Fox retired 14 consecutive batters until the sixth when she allowed a solo homer by Mikey Kenney, her seventh on the season. The home run snapped Fox's consecutive scoreless streak at 22 1/3 innings.
Texas will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the Spring Fling Tournament (March 13-16) and face host Hawai'i on Tuesday (March 13) at 10 p.m. Central before continuing Big 12 Conference play at Iowa State (March 23-25).
Notes: Through the first 20 games of the season, Texas is batting .371 as a team with a 0.98 staff ERA...Texas is now 5-0 this season in one-run games...Lexy Bennett now has 130 career RBI, nine shy of the school career record held by Loryn Johnson...Bennett now has eight multi-hit games, tied for the team lead with Brejae Washington...Washington and Courtney Craig extended their season-high hitting streaks to seven games each while Taylor Hoagland had her hitting streak snapped at six games today.

Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Connie Clark
On Rachel Fox: After the home run, she immediately came back. She didn't lose her composure, she just got to the next pitch and that was awesome for her to do that to keep us in this tight ball game.
On pitching: Kim Bruins is throwing the ball exceptionally well for us too. If we were doing a three game series, KB would probably come back and start. It's a benefit for us to have great looks in the circle. We're bringing Gabby Smith along as a freshman. She's got some good stuff, it's just about getting some confidence and over time she'll be another good pitcher as well.
