LAWRENCE, Kansas - Taylor Hoagland set a new Texas career record for home runs after hitting two homers on Saturday as the No. 5 Texas Longhorns completed a Big 12 sweep with a 13-6 victory against the Kansas Jayhawks. Hoagland, who entered the game with 35 career round-trippers, broke Amy Hooks' previous mark by hitting her 10th and 11th home run of the season to go with four RBI.
The first four hits for Texas (35-5, 9-3 Big 12) were home runs until Brejae Washington's single in the fifth inning. Courtney Craig and Karina Scott also homered while senior Nadia Taylor set a new Texas school record for drawing five walks in the game. Taylor's record broke Desiree Williams' mark of four walks (vs. Oklahoma on March 28, 2009).
Texas also set a new school record as a team by drawing 12 walks against the Kansas pitching staff.
Hoagland started the game by hitting the first pitch from Alicia Pille to left center, but Chanin Naugin returned the favor with a solo shot for Kansas in the first to tie it at 1-1. Scott led off the Texas second with a solo shot, her eighth on the season. Kim Bruins would make it a 3-1 lead after a throwing error from KU catcher Lexi Bryant on an attempt to throw out Hoagland at second.
Craig's two-run homer started a seven-run fifth for the Longhorns that was finished by Hoagland's three-run home run to center that earned her the career record. With the chance of being run-ruled, Kansas would fight back against Texas starter Blaire Luna. Maggie Hull's two-run double with the bases loaded started a five-run rally for the Jayhawks with Maddie Stein's RBI single knocking out Luna. Rachel Fox came in and would stop the momentum. Fox finished the game with 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Longhorns would add three insurance runs in the seventh to complete the sweep.
Texas continues Big 12 play on Wednesday (April 18) at 6:30 p.m. before hosting Oklahoma State next weekend, Friday-Sunday (April 20-22). Game times for the Oklahoma State series will be 5 p.m., 1 p.m. and 11 a.m. with all three games broadcast on Longhorn Network.
