COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Amber Garza hit two home runs and registered six RBI Thursday as the No. 18/16 Texas A&M Aggies earned a 9-0 win in six innings over the No. 7/8 Texas Longhorns. The Aggies hit four homers in the game to take the opening game of the three-game Big 12 Conference series.
Texas (37-8, 11-6) stranded nine runners in the game as the Longhorns were shutout for the second time in three games.
Mel Dumezich (24-10) went the distance for Texas A&M (33-14, 13-6), throwing six scoreless innings and scattering seven hits.
Taylor Hoagland hit an infield single to start the game and got to third when she made a heads-up play on Brejae Washington's sacrifice. Lexy Bennett then walked and stole second to put runners at second and third with one out, but Nadia Taylor flied out to shallow center and Karina Scott flied out to left as Texas was unable to score.
Texas A&M used back-to-back homers as part of a four-run second inning. Cassie Tysarczyk singled to lead off the inning, followed by Dumezich's walk. Garza then belted her third homer of the season with the three-run shot to left center as Nicole Morgan hit a solo shot, her fourth on the year, on the ensuing at-bat. In the top of the fifth, the Longhorns had the bases loaded with two outs, but Scott's pop-up to short on a 2-0 count halted the Texas threat.
Tysarczyk doubled off Kim Bruins in the sixth to lead off the inning as Bruins (7-5) ended up allowing seven runs on seven hits. Dumezich walked before Garza hit her second homer with another three-run shot to left center. Gabby Smith relieved Bruins, giving up a walk to Morgan before Brittany Walker finished off the game with a two-run homer to right.
The series continues with Saturday and Sunday's games will be played at McCombs Field in Austin. Saturday's game at 12:30 p.m. will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net while Sunday's 5 p.m. game will be broadcast on Longhorn Network.
