AUSTIN, Texas - Corrin Genovese's three-run homer provided a key role in a seven-run seventh inning as the No. 11 Missouri Tigers handed the No. 3 Texas Longhorns their first loss at home this season, 11-4, in front of a season-high 1,198 fans at Red & Charline McCombs Field.
The Longhorns (32-3, 6-1) fought back from a three-run deficit with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth innings to tie it at 4-4 before Missouri (29-6, 8-3) sent 12 batters to the plate in the final inning.
Genovese was 2-for-4 with four RBI and matched by teammate Ashley Fleming, who also went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Ashtin Stevens was 3-for-5 for the Tigers. Chelsea Thomas (15-4) allowed four runs on 12 hits while striking out 12 Longhorn batters. Torie Schmidt led the Longhorns with a 3-for-4 night while Taylor Hoagland, Brejae Washington and Lexy Bennett had two hits apiece.
Stephens hit an infield single in the first and scored on Fleming's double to right center for the 1-0 Missouri lead. Kim Bruins led off the second with a double and later scored on Hoagland's RBI infield single.
Missouri posted three runs in the fifth after back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to Fleming and Nicole Hudson. Genovese later added an RBI single for the 4-1 lead.
The Longhorns looked to regain the momentum after head coach Connie Clark was ejected in the middle of the fifth and Texas obliged by producing a run on Bruins' RBI groundout. Hoagland and Washington hit back-to-back singles in the sixth as Karina Scott would work Thomas to a full count with two outs before delivering the game-tying, two-run double to right center.
In the seventh, Lindsey Muller hit an RBI double off Bruins, who relieved UT starter Rachel Fox in the fifth. Blaire Luna then relieved Bruins and was greeted by Genovese's three-run shot to left, her fourth of the season to break the game open. Fleming finished off the scoring with a two-run single as the Tigers added four more runs after the Genovese homer.
The series concludes tomorrow at noon with the televised broadcast on Longhorn Network. Gametracker live stats, along with a live Twitter feed (@TexasSoftball), for the game will be available on TexasSports.com.
