NEWARK, N.J. -- Former University of Texas basketball standout J'Covan Brown will look to have his name called during Thursday night's NBA Draft at Prudential Center. ESPN will provide start-to-finish coverage of the draft beginning at 6 p.m. Central (7 p.m. Eastern).
Brown was a three-year player at both guard positions who finished his career ranked 18thin UT history in scoring with 1,376 points in 103 games (13.4 ppg). He also concluded his career ranked third on the school chart for highest career free throw percentage (.867, 345-of-398).
In his junior season (2011-12), Brown was named the USBWA District VII Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Conference First Team and the NABC All-District 8 First Team. A two-time Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week honoree, he also was an Academic All-Big 12 First Team choice and claimed a spot on the Phillips 66 Big 12 All-Championship Team.
Brown led the Big 12 Conference in scoring (20.1 ppg) this past year, and his 683 points marked the sixth-highest single-season total in school history. He recorded 30-plus points four times during the season, topped the 20-point mark 19 times and reached double figures in scoring in 32 of the 34 games. Brown also led the team in minutes played (35.6 mpg) and ranked second on the squad in both assists (130) and steals (41).
Since the NBA Draft began in 1947, a total of 41 Longhorns have heard their names called on draft night. Texas has produced a total of 14 first-round selections and 11 second-round picks in program history. Raymond Downs, a sixth-round pick by St. Louis in 1957, was the first Longhorn to be drafted.
Texas has had 16 players drafted in the previous 13 years under head coach Rick Barnes (dating back to the 1999 Draft), including 11 players selected in the last six years. UT has had 10 first-round picks in the Rick Barnes era entering Thursday night's draft: Chris Mihm (2000), T.J. Ford (2003), LaMarcus Aldridge (2006), Kevin Durant (2007), D.J. Augustin (2008), Avery Bradley (2010), Damion James (2010), Tristan Thompson (2011), Jordan Hamilton (2011) and Cory Joseph (2011).
