AUSTIN, Texas--Senior utility Sha'Dare McNeal led the No. 2 Texas Longhorns with nine kills in their 3-0 sweep over Cal Poly (25-17, 25-16, 15-10) Saturday morning at Gregory Gym. With this victory in their second performance of the 26 West Longhorn Classic, UT is now 2-0 in regular season play and has not lost a set.
McNeal also put up one assist, four digs and four blocks for Texas. She logged only two hitting errors and finished the game with a .368 clip (9-2-19). Sophomore All- America outside hitter Haley Eckerman registered five kills, three service aces, four digs and two blocks. Junior All-America outside hitter Bailey Webster contributed seven kills, as well as four digs and three blocks. Sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Khat Bell hit .500 with two kills in four attempts and no errors.
The match also featured outstanding play from Longhorn freshmen. In her collegiate debut, middle blocker Molly McCage logged four kills in nine attempts with no errors for a hitting percentage of .444. She also recorded two digs and eight blocks with only one blocking error. Freshman outside hitter/setter Nicole Dalton registered her first double-double for UT with 16 assists and 13 digs while adding three kills and seven blocks.
Junior outside hitter Holly Franks led the Mustangs (0-2) with eight kills, one service ace and eight digs.
Midway through the first set, Texas launched an impressive run with eight unanswered points, led by junior setter Hannah Allison's serving efforts. Texas held Cal Poly to a -.100 hitting percentage in the first set and though the Mustangs would claim 12 of the final 20 points of the set, including a 10-4 run, it would not be enough to overcome the Longhorn lead.
The second set was balanced early. Throughout the first 11 points, the set was tied five times and there were three lead changes. Trailing 5-4, the Longhorns set out on a 5-0 run, punctuated by three consecutive service aces by Eckerman. It was also a big set for Webster, who posted four kills in six attempts for a .667 clip.
The Longhorns take on No. 19 San Diego Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at Gregory Gym in the concluding match of the 26 West Longhorn Classic. The match will be broadcast on Longhorn Network with Gametracker live stats and audio webcast on TexasSports.com.
