RIFU, Japan - University of Texas freshman goalkeeper Abby Smith and the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team suffered a 3-0 setback to Germany in the Americans' final group-stage match of the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup on Monday afternoon inside Miyagi Stadium. Despite the loss, the Americans finished 1-1-1 in group stage play to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament. The U.S. and China PR each had four points, but the Americans moved on due to goal differential.
Smith has yet to enter into a contest as USA goalkeeper Bryane Heaberlin played her third-straight complete match Monday versus Germany. The contest against the Germans was the first time the two powerhouses had met in the group stage of the tournament. Heading into the game, the U.S. posted a 3-1-0 record in four previous U-19 or U-20 Women's World Cups, with every match taking place in the knockout stage.
The U.S. now shifts its focus to the quarterfinals, where it will face Korea DPR at 5:20 a.m. Central on Friday at Komaba Stadium in Saitama. The match will be televised live by ESPNU and streamed on ESPN3. Should the USA squad defeat Korea DPR, the Americans would face the winner of the Nigeria-Mexico quarterfinal contest in the semifinal round on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
