SAITAMA, Japan - University of Texas freshman goalkeeper Abby Smith and the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team earned 2-1 double-overtime victory over Korea DPR in the quarterfinals of the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup on Friday evening inside Komaba Stadium. Chioma Ubogagu scored the game-winning goal in the 98th minute after the Koreans tied the match at 1-1 in the 75th minute.
Smith has yet to enter into a contest as USA goalkeeper Bryane Heaberlin played her fourth-straight complete match Friday. The victory gives the Americans a berth into the semifinals, their fifth trip to the round in U-20 World Cup history.
In the Sept. 4 semifinals, the Americans will face Nigeria, which topped Mexico 1-0 Thursday afternoon. The 1:50 a.m. CT match against Nigeria will be televised live by ESPNU and streamed on ESPN3. Should the USA capture a victory, it would face the winner of the Japan-Germany semifinal contest in the championship on Saturday, Sept. 8.
